Panchayat web series review: A comedy-drama that aims the idea of living life at its best

Published

on

A small-town drama from the hinterland in Hindi has almost reached the cinemas and web-series over the last five years. If we go into the depth, a gazillion stories are waiting. They do not need to be unusual, but life is not the same thing other than finding an interesting idea. Panchayat is a series of eight episodes and was created by The Viral Fever and Amazon Prime Video Original. It is the story of a protagonist Abhishek Tripathi. He will be drawing on life in a village and seeming improbable but trying to create critical situations for those who live in it.

Due to lack of employment opportunities, Abhishek joined the panchayat office in a remote village called Phulera in Baliya district of Uttar Pradesh. He decided this with a lot of meditation. At the beginning of the series, he regrets that he was not as desirable as his friend for failing to get better placement in college, he works in a multinational company for Rs 12 lakh a year.

There is no mention of the vocation of their academic courses. Those with higher, specialised courses tend to opt for lower-paying jobs because the options are limited and the tasks less. “But you have a chance to see real India and rural India,” friend convinced Abhishek, “and you will have the opportunity to become Mohan Bhargava of Swades, to develop roads and install hand pumps.” Abhishek takes the job because he has no choice. But he will be preparing for CAT which was his dream.

But before that, he must have had the wits of the people who introduced him to the Phulera. Brij Bhushan is the panchayat’s Pradhan. Vikas is the right person working as an attendant in the office. Panchayat does not go for sarcastic moments; it brings significant changes in the development of its characters.

It aims at the line, no matter how much life seems to bear, the idea of staying there for a while. Highlights, coronation moments are taken from these events. While the series sets out to depict what life is like in the microcosmic world of India, it does not forget to point out the isolation of its protagonist among the over-committed occupiers. He was still affected by the social media posts of his friends who were partying on the weekends of city life.

The show also does not care about the deep-rooted patriarchy, where you live or what your achievements are, the division of class and caste, the domination prevalence, the politics, and so on. But some moments resonate deeply by the relaxing music given by Anurag Saikia. The villagers are worried about the tree spreading with deep roots on a secluded path leading to the village. They think of it as haunting, and it has to be solved. Water Tower, similar to the one in Sholay, is the perfect of the village’s side view. There is a certain feeling to keep the craze alive by protecting material things like the old locks. In some of these cases, the show will grow, but it will only fade once the ideas begin to justify it. But they do not harm the overall simplicity of the show.

The downside, however, is that simplicity is taken very seriously. The young man who is in pursuit of the life he wants has not questioned enough, and when he does, it is too late. The village where a woman has been Pradhan, the screen time given to her is short. It is not only a waste of Gupta’s talent but also a chance to create a good show that can go deeper in exploring life at the village.

As the Unlock mission has begun, the shooting of several serials has started. But replacements are taking place as several actors are not feeling safe to come out of their houses during the pandemic.
Avneet Kaur, who plays Yasmine in Alladin Naam Toh Suna Hi Hoga, has quit the show for the same reason. However, Ashi Singh, Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai heroine, is going to replace her in the show.
When asked about this, Ashi said that she loves to play different roles with different characteristics. When Aladdin was offered to her, she did not have any second thoughts. She grabbed the opportunity at its first chance, as the role of Yasmine is very different from that of her previous role as Naina in Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai. And she was prompted to take up the fantasy role, as it would require action and challenge.
It is not easy to replace any character, let alone a heroine, as the audience will have an emotional attachment. Besides, it is very difficult to overcome the benchmark set by the original actress. However, since the show is returning after a 3-month break, the audience may accept a new face while reconnecting.
Avneet has expressed her unhappiness about quitting the show. She said she does not want to discontinue the show but has no other way as she is worried about her health. Last year, she has suffered from Dengue fever, which has pulled her immunity down. Also, from the pressure of her board exams, she has been exhausted. Despite these, she had resumed her role, .but now, her parents are worried about her resuming the shoots, and thus she has decided to quit. ‘Health comes first,’ she says.
