Zoom Video Calls are not End-to-End encrypted, What does it mean for you?

If like everyone else, you also have jumped on the new trend of conducting video calls on Zoom app, then here is something you might want to know. These calls on Zoom are not end-to-encrypted. While Zoom has, on many occasions, said that the company has done everything in their power to make sure that the calls are encrypted end-to-end, a report that has surfaced says something else.

This new report has come under the light and it mentions a Zoom official saying that there is no end-to-end encryption in the app. A spokesperson further reiterated what the report said – “Currently there is no way to make sure the calls are encrypted end-to-end.”

Zoom has claimed in the past that the content exchanged during these video calls is protected and secured, but it is not. However, the application does use a certain level of encryption.

Zoom uses Transport Layer Security encryption, which is standard encryption for browser accessing HTTPS websites. This encryption protocol helps to keep the content private from the potential attacks from any third-party. However, what you need to notice is, a TLS is not equivalent to E2E, which is required when it comes to the point of security of any private content sharing platform.

E2E encryption protects the content from being intercepted by any third-party. However, when Zoom said E2E, they meant, the content is not decrypted when transferred across the Zoom cloud. Also, the text messages shared on the app are E2E encrypted.

Zoom has further mentioned that it collects data from video meetings only to improve the quality of their service. The data that the app collects is your IP addresses, device details, details of the operating system you are using, however, they do not access the video meeting of the data, they have claimed.

However, this might change just anytime and Zoom might be asked by the regulators to share the private data of the users with them for various reasons. Some courts may also ask Zoom to share the data for legal proceedings, it is just a matter of when.

WhatsApp officially launches eight-person group video calling

WhatsApp officially launches eight-person group video calling

WhatsApp has made an official announcement that group video calls may now involve eight people. This announcement came after Mark Zuckerberg, the Chief Executive of Facebook made an announcement related to the same topic.

The earlier limit to video calls was four, which means, users can now add four more people to their video calls.

This announcement was made on a blog post, on which the company claimed that users around the world are spending more than 115 billion minutes video calling on WhatsApp. According to the social media company, this figure is above the average time people spent video calling others before the pandemic.

The company has also reiterated that all the voice and video calls on the platform are encrypted end-to-end just like the chats are.

The post also said that platform has been developed so that many users can join, including people belonging to slow network area or using lower-end devices.

As one would expect, WhatsApp is not the only application which is focusing on the video calling feature during the pandemic. Mark Zuckerberg, while announcing eight user video calling feature, also mentioned a new feature for Facebook’s messaging service, Messenger. Messenger Chat Rooms would now be available on the app, where 50 people can be on the same call at the same time.

Zoom is another platform that is going viral these days. It allows the addition of 100 people on a single video call on its free version. It is possible that WhatsApp increases the number of people in the near future, however, the 2 billion-plus user base might become a problem. When looked from a server point of view, scaling group video calling feature for a number this big might become a problem.

Since the pandemic has hit the globe, video calling usage has increased tremendously. In a matter of weeks, the stock price of Zoom has skyrocketed, more than the price of some of the most valuable companies like American Airlines, Hilton, and Expedia. Currently, Zoom has a market cap of over $31 billion.
